Terrain Difficulty

1. Flat

2. Gentle Grades

3. Rolling Hills

4. Mostly rolling hills, some steep climbs

5. Steep hills, long climbs A. Relaxed pace (10-13 mph average); for beginner to intermediate riders; occasional pacelines (up to 20 mph); steady climbs; numerous regroups, no one left behind; riding skills instructions; help with mechanical problems if possible

Pace

A. Relaxed pace (10-13 mph average); for beginner to intermediate riders; occasional pacelines (up to 20 mph); steady climbs; numerous regroups, no one left behind; riding skills instructions; help with mechanical problems if possible

B. Moderate pace (14-16 mph average); for intermediate to strong riders; occasional pacelines (16-22 mph); steady climbs with regroups

C. Brisk pace (16-18 mph average); for strong to very strong riders; frequent pacelines (20-28 mph); strong, steady climbs; occasional sprints

D. Fast pace (18+ mph average); for very strong riders; constant, fast pacelines (24-35 mph); brisk climbs

Example

Example: A ride rated at 3-B-29 is a 29 mile ride over rolling hills at moderate pace.

Although mountain bike rides are not rated with this system, when we use this system on a mountain bike ride we're saying it's the equivalent of doing those things on a road ride.
